Mentoring Program Goals

The goal of the SCCYI Mentoring Program is to provide the youth of Swift Current and surrounding area with people that they can depend on and look up to through long-term, caring, supportive relationships. People that are willing to put in the time and effort to build into the future of our youth. It is our hope that the youth who receive mentoring will learn the life skills necessary to be positive members of society and have access to the resources and supports that are necessary for them to succeed.

Being a mentor means being a trusted adult friend to your mentee. This role is meant to empower the youth by listening to their opinions and letting them make some choices so long as safety is not compromised.

A mentor is also a positive role model by demonstrating how to make decisions and respond to different life situations appropriately. A positive role model sets an example more by actions than they do words.

Mentors are nurturers of possibilities and are given the opportunity to help their mentee develop their strengths. As a mentor you can be a positive support and provide continuous encouragement as your mentee develops.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor but have more questions, contact The Center for more information. If you would like to apply, see the steps outlined below.

Process to Becoming a Mentor:

  1. Complete an application form: Mentor Application
  2. Vulnerable Sector check is required. We will provide a letter for you to take to the local RCMP detachment to get it free of cost.
  3. Copy of Driver’s License given to Program Administrator.
  4. Read and understand Policies in the Mentoring Handbook. The Mentoring Handbook will be provided for you after submission of the application.
  5. In-person interview with the Executive Director and/or Program Administrator.
  6. Complete online training – 2 – 3 hours long.
  7. Sign Confidentiality and Mentoring Agreement forms.

After the process is complete, we will work to match you with a mentee. This process includes a meeting with the parents/guardians of the mentee and The Center staff.

To Become a Mentee:

First, make sure you qualify. Can you answer ‘yes’ to all these questions?

  • Are you a youth between the ages of 10-16? (Once you are on the waitlist or matched, you can remain in the program until you are 18, but we generally accept applications until youth is 16. Exceptions may be made for youth outside of this age range but just know the chances of being matched is lessened)
  • Do your guardians approve and support you being in The Center mentoring program?
  • Are you willing to meet with your mentor 2 hours a week for one year?
  • Do you understand that wait times vary before a match with a mentor may be found?
  • Are you ready to build a relationship with a mentor and be open to new experiences?
  • Do you understand that the program will be conducted in a safe, structured environment and you will communicate any concerns or issues that arise to your mentor or Program Administrator?

If you answered ‘yes’, click the link to fill out our Mentee Application form. You will be contacted by our team to arrange a quick get-to-know-you meeting. Once that is complete, you will added to our waitlist while we look for a compatible mentor!
